Jordan has no conventional oil and gas reserves, unlike most other countries throughout the Middle East, it is amongst the highest in the world in dependency on foreign energy sources, with 96% of the country's energy needs coming from imported oil and natural gas from neighboring Middle Eastern countries.
Jordan Petroleum Refinery Company runs the only oil refinery in Jordan and engages in refining, producing, distributing, and transporting petroleum products in Jordan. It was established in 1956, and construction of the oil refinery plant started in 1957 with the refinery located in Zarqa, about 35 km east of Amman.
With limited gas resources in Jordan, National Petroleum Company PLC involves in the exploration and production of gas from Risha field, 350 east of Amman. All the production of gas being consumed by Risha Power Plant (90 MW) owned by CEGCO.
